Matt 3:4 -
John’s clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.Observations
John’s (the Baptist) attire must have been unusual, even for his day, since Scripture mentions it so profoundly. To me, it speaks of his persona and what is important (or not) to him. He probably looked like a “caveman” – even 2000 years ago. He clearly ate what God made available to him, which is quite contrary to our modern American lifestyle where we can pick and choose exactly what we want. John was truly living on faith.
Application
For years I have been attempting to simplify my life by selling or giving away things in my life that don’t have
utility. Moving from a 4-bedroom 2-story house to a small 1-bedroom apartment, I’ve been able to get rid of lots of things I don’t use much. It’s a freeing feeling to have less – but it takes a major mindset overhaul for Americans to do this. Our society/culture programs us to desire and seek everything our eyes want. “He who dies with the most toys, wins.” Wins what?! Complete separation from all those things they’ve spent their lives amassing! That’s what.
Prayer
Lord, help me to continue to trust You for everything, and to understand You will open the doors for me in Your perfect time. Help me to live a life devoted to You, like John, and not allow the things of this world to override my service to You.
