Matthew 25:15
“To one he gave five talents of money, to another two talents and to another one talent, each according to his ability.”
Observations/Applications
In Matthew 25 Jesus is teaching that we must be ready for the day of His return when all will be judged. At the beginning of the chapter, in the Parable of the Ten Virgins (Mt. 25:1-13), He tells us that we must always be ready for that day because no one knows the day or the hour of that return and judgment. At the end of Chapter 25 (Mt. 25:31-46), Jesus talks about that day of judgment and explains that one of the basis of judgment will be whether one ahs shown love to his fellow man regardless of his status. In the middle of these two is the Parable of the Talents, shedding more light on the subject of what God expects from us while we wait for Christ’s return.
When I first learned that we would be doing this journal, I knew I wanted to say something about this parable because it truly redirected my life and brought me to a closer relationship with Jesus. I can’t count how many times I have read this parable, but I had never focused on these words and I find them to be so essential to the message.
The message of the parable is simple. When you are judged on that Last Day, what is your balance sheet going to look like? Everything we have is a gift from God. That everything includes not only our material possessions but also who we are. We are called to do much more than to go through life merely existing and enjoying these gifts. We need to make use of these gifts for God’s purpose in giving them to us. It’s easy to take the approach that you get a free pass on this subject because you are not particularly rich in material possessions and are otherwise not gifted with a particular talent. But that’s not the case. Everyone has something to offer. It’s funny how so many passages in the Bible lead us to the same place. We’ve been hearing about it every week and it’s printed in big letters on the cover of the brochure we read each Sunday: “Love, Live Lead.”
Please search your heart, listen to God’s voice and find that special gift God has given you and share it with others. Use it to glorify God, to help your brothers and sisters. Get involved.
