Yesterday at The Pursuit we ended our 3 week series "Eat this Book." The message this week was how God intended the Bible to be something we crave like dessert not like something we have to choke down like green vegetables. You can hear it here.
I believe it was Bob Smith who had the brilliant idea of ending the series with a church-wide lunch. We rented the ballroom for an extra hour and ordered some delicious pasta from Joey the Baker. Two high school students also came up with the great idea to bake two Bible cakes so we could literally "Eat this Book."
We had a great crowd turn out for the Celebration Service and everyone stayed for lunch except for two!
It was so much fun watching people get to know one another over a meal. Each table had a great mix of people who didn't know one another resulting in a lot of great conversations and laughter. Someone even suggested we do this more often and have each family bring a food item from their native country. I couldn't help but laugh to myself and think of the countless "potluck" dinners I experienced in my home church in tiny Cambridge City, Indiana. There it was just buckets of KFC, green bean casseroles and scalloped potatoes. I am pretty sure the food at a Pursuit-potluck would look a little bit different! Needless to say, in all the church planting books and all of the creative ideas new churches are coming up with, it is strangely ironic one of the best ideas for us could be one of the oldest traditions.
If we do this, I am totally bringing the bucket of KFC!
